MARIA KOUYOUMDJIAN
Maria is a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with many years of experience working in Cyprus and the UK. Having studied, trained and worked both in Cyprus and the UK (NHS) Maria specialised in the assessment and treatment of anxiety disorders, depression and psychosis in children, adolescents and adults. During her employment in the UK (NHS) she further specialised and worked as a CBT therapist (Oxford trained) treating clients with a range of mental health problems.
Maria has worked in a number of settings including mental health hospitals, psychiatric inpatient settings, private practise, a fertility and maternity clinic and the Central Prison in Cyprus. She holds specialised training in CBT from the Oxford Centre for Cognitive Therapy. Her experience includes psychiatric inpatient treatment of adults, treatment of mentally disordered offenders, clinical assessment and treatment of prisoners in the central prison, assessment and treatment of children and adults with generalised anxiety disorder, OCD, phobias, social anxiety, generalised anxiety and worry difficulties, health anxiety, PTSD, sexual disorders and personality disorders. She is also specially trained in delivering pregnancy specific cognitive behavioural therapy for perinatal and postnatal anxiety and tokophobia, OCD, depression, PTSD and psychosis. Maria holds training and experience in Cognitive Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp).
Maria offers advanced specialised psychological assessment and therapy for children and adults who present with a range of mental health difficulties, including anxiety disorders, depression, personality disorders and psychosis. She also carries out specialised assessments for court cases and other service bodies. Her main therapeutic approach is Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a type of therapy which uses research-based techniques to help people deal with their difficulties focusing on the ‘here and now’ and adopting a goal directed approach. She is passionate about using evidence-based interventions in the work that she does, and is motivated by seeing the positive results that can be achieved using a cognitive behavioural approach. Maria strongly believes that clients can achieve recovery by understanding their difficulties and what triggers and maintains them, and through therapy they learn the skills and techniques to overcome their problems. Maria also passionately feels that people can learn life-long skills and tools in therapy which they can then apply after treatment finishes, for or any difficulties that may arise in the future, in this way becoming their own therapist.
